The neighborhood didn’t truly blossom until the street car line running from downtown to Silver Spring, Maryland began making stops in the burgeoning Petworth, becoming an early century commuter’s lifestyle possible. From then until the mid-century it flourished, but like most district communities, the second half of the 20th century was cruel, as the effects of economic hardship became the sign of a troubling period of the district’s history stemming from the riots of the late 1960’s.

For more than 20 years Petworth, and its neighbor Columbia Heights and others, suffered heavily as local businesses did not return to the neighborhoods that made them successful. Today, however, is not then. Revival has reached Petworth and people are flocking to it once again as it remains one of the last reasonably priced places to live in the district. And as new development has taken hold, with both retail, restaurants and new living spaces, it has become irresistible for the home buyers eager to live in the city under reasonable cost while not sacrificing on amenities.
From new condominiums to completely redone row-houses, Petworth offers something for everyone regardless of economic status.
And with a close commute to downtown via a walkable metro line within it’s borders it can be a commuter’s joy for those who need true market value.
