North Bethesda is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland. It borders the city of Rockville.
Significant through-roads in North Bethesda include Interstates 270 and 495 and Maryland State Highways 187 (Old Georgetown Road), 355 (Rockville Pike), and 547 (Strathmore Avenue). The Twinbrook, White Flint, and Grosvenor-Strathmore Washington Metro stations all serve the area, as does the Ride On bus system.
Other prominent entities in the area are The Strathmore Arts Center, Walter Johnson High School, the Georgetown Preparatory School, the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, the White Flint shopping mall, the Kennedy-Shriver Aquatic Center, The Jewish Community Center, and North Bethesda Market, the tallest building in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Things about to happen:
Major re-development of the entire to encourage walking, shopping, residential, and commerce. Planners, county officials and the White Flint Partnership accepted a 2012 Maryland Sustainable Growth Award-Smart Growth Communities for White Flint implementation strategies. The recognition came because the Sector Plan implementation addresses several smart growth principles defined by the state Sustainable Growth Commission, from quality of life and sustainability to public participation.
