From the residential development experienced after the civil war, through the turn of the century Dupont Circle’s development was spear-headed from the cities wealthiest, building mansions and brownstone townhomes that still stand today.

But as the 20th century moved on, the neighborhood began to decline as people moved away from the city after World War II, and more severely, after the 1968 riots.

But from the ashes came rebirth.

It is an amazing representation of urban residential living in the nation’s capital.

In the 1970’s Dupont Circle reemerged, fueled by urban pioneers seeking a bohemian neighborhood, becoming a beacon of acceptance.

Population diversification accelerated the popularity of the neighborhood in the 1980s and 1990s, and through the 2000’s became one of the most trendy locations in the country with coffeehouses, restaurants, bars, and upscale retail stores flanking the famous traffic circle, bringing wealth and sophistication to one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country.

From a weekly farmer’s market and yoga classes to the annual Capital Pride Parade, Dupont Circle stays close to its roots while maintaining some of the highest home sales prices in the city.

It is an amazing representation of urban residential living in the nation’s capital.

Details and Numbers

For many, Dupont Circle remains a beacon of hope in the city. It is, perhaps, one of the most tolerant neighborhoods in the nation. It is also one of the most expensive places to live in the entire area.

The Pride Parade travels 1.5 miles through Dupont Circle and 17th Street and ends in the Logan Circle neighborhood of northwest Washington, DC. The annual Pride Parade attracts over 150,000 spectators annually.
