Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 7.41.16 AMOne and a half miles due north of the White House, sitting on an elevated plateau facing the Washington cityscape, the neighborhood of Columbia Heights is an anchor — not only as the geographic center of the entire city, but as a quintessential example of neighborhood that has put itself back on the map.

The area first earned notice in 1804, when President Thomas Jefferson placed a marker on this hill establishing a longitudinal meridian along 16th Street that he named the “White House meridian.” Because of its natural elevation and majestic view of the city, in the late 19th century, Congress even commissioned plans to create a new, more opulent White House upon Meridian Hill — plans which were eventually abandoned in favor of private use.

Columbia Heights is a thriving community, with a diversity of home styles and a range of amenities that provides any resident the luxury of living the urban dream.

Still, the area remained an object of attention. The grand European design of Meridian Hill Park, with its terraced gardens and cascading pools, became an instant favorite in the community when it was completed in 1936, and wealthy Washingtonians began flocking to Columbia Heights. The neighborhood attracted politicians and others seeking an upscale urban lifestyle.

In the 1970s, the general economic decline of the city turned Meridian Hill Park into a magnet for crime, but in the past 20 years, concerned residents have successfully lobbied the government to patrol the park and restore its former beauty, and neighbors have now reclaimed this valuable asset to the community.

In 2008, the construction of the DC USA Center directly adjacent to the Columbia Heights Metro station marked this area’s rebirth into a true urban destination. With close to a million square feet of retail and entertainment space, and easy access to trains, buses, and parking, this award-winning mall at first housed mostly national chains. However, it soon began drawing enough foot traffic that numerous local mom-and-pop businesses were able to establish themselves in its perimeter. Today, residents and visitors can enjoy a variety of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife options that are surprisingly close to downtown DC.

Residential spaces in Columbia Heights vary from newly built one bedroom condominiums, to glamorous loft-style apartments, to elegantly refurbished row houses. The neighborhood has a place for every kind of urban space seeker. Today you may find residents running in the park, eating a legendary torta from Pica Taco, or playing in the fountains.
