5 critical SEO tips for bloggers and business

SEO strategies I learned at Coldwell Banker’s Gen Blue

Josh Pike’s, the Senior VP from Alloy Media, spoke at a break out session in Las Vegas at Coldwell Banker’s Generation Blue Conference this week, and I am here to tell you his content was brilliant.  As a blogger, and one who speaks on social media, SEO or search engine opitimization is always brought up   no matter where I go.  However, I was thrilled to hear such a clean cut answer to this question.  Therefore, I would like to share with you some of Josh’s top pieces of advice as well as share the link of the downloadable PDF of his presentation ( SEO Strategies ).  Remember, if you like what he says, be sure to tweet him and let him know.  (Note: these excerpts are my favorites and directly from his presentation)

1.  Title Tags

Title tags are now considered the single most important onsite SEO element for a page.
-Use unique titles for each page of content
-Always include target keywords and variations of keywords toward the beginning of the title
-Make readable, but avoid use of stop words and unessary words like (if, the, of)
-Keep titles to 75 characters or less

2.  META Tags

META Description tag is often used by engines as the listing description on the search results page
-Write in a natural style, using keywords and their synonyms
-Descriptions should be unique and relevant for each page
-Don’t repeat keywords more than twice
-Limit length to 250 characters or less.
*Meta Tags are no longer considered by the engines and  may be omitted

3.  Headline Tags

Headline tags are the page’s visible heading and reflect the main idea of a page or subsection
– Headlines are given additional weight by search engines
– Should reflect the page’s target keywords when possible
– Use keyword rich sub-headlines to break up contextually divergent content on a page
– Titles/subtitles should be housed within <H1>, <H2>,… tags

4. Body Copy

Body copy is the main content on the page and is critical to enforcing keyword relevance
– Use target keywords and synonyms “naturally” throughout the copy; don’t overuse, or “stuff”, keywords
– Bold or italicize keywords within the content to add prominence
– Hyperlink to other relevant site pages using keywords as the link text
– Incorporate a substantial amount of content on each page (200+ words)
– Include social sharing widgets to facilitate easy content distribution

5.  SEO isn’t about using tricks but adding value through:

– Onsite Optimization
– Link Building
– Content Marketing (sending content out through social media network)
